Coming from Montevideo through the Interbalnearia Route and
following the path of white, fine and shiny sands, the visitor
will suddenly see a scene of high towers along the sea, but
there will still be a long way to enter the peninsula itself.
Beaches have traveled with him, just as the yachts and boats
headed to their docks. The peninsula constitutes a world of
containment for the ocean waves’ force and produces two different
kinds of coasts: Brava and Mansa. (Literally: Rough and Mild).
The first one is directly facing the Atlantic and is the favorite
choice of those who enjoy challenging its encircling foams.
The second one delights children and quiet-spirited people.
Being an area of land surrounded by the sea it presents a
higher air oxygenation and a higher ozone, iodine and saltpeter
proportion than an average coastal zone.
Punta del Este is mainly and especially a seaside resort
and is consequently conditioned by the sea. The swimming pools
in some private houses and in some hotels contributes to the
aesthetical features and constitute a local characteristic.
The global accommodation offer, which includes hotel services
and real estate rentals, exceeds the one hundred thousand
beds, and all kinds of services are prepared to deal with
an even greater demand.
At night other attractions invite the tourist. Musical and
cultural spectacles, discotheques frequented by youngsters,
the excitement of the card table and the games in casinos,
or attending absolute cinematographic releases in the movie
theaters are some of them. For gourmets, the gates of a culinary
paradise become open, since the world’s specialized cuisine
displays the best it has to offer here.
Nowadays the access to the La Brava Beach’s golden sands
constitutes an invitation to pleasure and enjoyment. The structural
reforms have changed its image and improved their inhabitants’
quality of life. Young and adults enjoy nature with the advantages
of progress. The new double lane routes, the significant investment
realized with the aim of lighting up the roads and the preoccupation
to decompress transit in zones that were formerly impassable
at certain hours of the day such as the journey between LaBrava
and La Barra beaches have improved Punta del Este and Maldonado’s
image and future prospects.
With growing importance every year, Maldonado’s Barra has
become a complementary (and sometimes completely independent
from Punta del Este) tourist attraction pole. This place has
gradually attracted tourists who wanted to stay away from
Punta del Este’s noisy lifestyle and has today its own intense
social life. There is not much left from the times in which
La Barra was a place of quietness and tranquility. Today discos,
restaurants, tourist bars and large houses have changed its
landscape and features. The beautiful Maldonado creek still
runs underneath, full of stories from former times (related
to the quiet life and some ships’ figureheads) but also writing
each day the stories from the present.
Punta del Este’s port constitutes a classic. It is one of
the visits often enjoyed by all tourists, be them new or experienced,
and also by Maldonado’s inhabitants. Now, the new port’s promenade
has turned this visit into not only a stimulating but also
safe experience. Planned with one-way roads, large parking
spaces and a four-and-a-half-meter wide pedestrian road guarded
by wooden railings, the port has once more become one of the
favorite places to visit. This new structure included vantage
points, Italian light fittings, English benches and waste
bins and an outstanding wooden footbridge on the sand dunes
that allows the access to the beach. This new and modern coastal
and port spot has strengthened the area’s gastronomic business.
With the recent remodeling, Roosevelt avenue has turned into
something more than just a transit area. Apart from being
one of the main linking routes between Punta del Este and
Maldonado, this avenue is a significant commercial center
with a diverse products and services offer that maintains
the elegant residential neighborhoods that stretch towards
the coast and the north of the avenue free from commercial
shops. Among the recently erected buildings we find Punta
del Este Shopping Mall which commercializes the best brands.
Due to its condition of non coastal main area this avenue
is crossed by diverse streets and avenues that converge in
the peninsula. The circulation problems generated by these
crossings were solved with rotunda that function as transit
distributors towards different places. Bicycle lanes have
been constructed along Roosevelt avenue, thus giving a kind
of new style to the city. These sidewalks allow young and
adults to safely enjoy bicycle riding or roller-skating. The
efficient structural layout of this important road net has
not affected the area’s natural beauty.
Punta del Este is internationally recognised as America's
main seaside resort. It's the main dish in this beach menu.
Whoever tries it is hooked forever. Situated in the Department
of Maldonado, it has ocean as well as river beaches. All of
them are worthwhile, although each year a different one becomes
fashionable. Youngsters troop to it as well as people from
the show business, surrounded by photographers and cameras.
Some of its most famous beaches are Portezuelo, (at the foot
of the 'Sierra de la Ballena'), the strip of beaches from
'Pinares' to 'Las Delicias', and the so-called 'tame beaches'
among which are 'El Grillo' and 'La Pastora'. After passing
the tip of the Peninsula we can find 'El Emir', 'de los Ingleses',
the famous 'Brava' and 'San Rafael' beach. Finally, we come
to beaches of the 'Barra' with its characteristic undulating
bridge and the 'Manantiales' beaches. On the way to 'José
Ignacio' there are many more spectacular stretches of white
sand, some populated, others almost untouched.
Punta del Este's main attraction is the extraordinary variety
of offers it has for the tourist. A wide range of hotels can
be found everywhere and they go from the most luxurious to
the most modest, but always comfortable. Restaurants with
high quality international and national cuisine. A cultural
activity with a wide variety of cinemas, theatres, casinos,
musical shows and parties all year round. Punta del Este never
sleeps and there's always something to do. Plus the unique
quality of its architecture, unspoilt coastline and abundant
forests give it a characteristic personality that differentiates
it from other international resorts. Punta del Este is a delicious
dish, even for the most demanding palate.
