Tourism is the third source of country’s income

The thousands of Chileans, Brasilians, Europeans and North Americans, among other foreigners, who arrive every month to visit Argentina, have become the third source of the country’s income.

The Minister of Tourism will offer up to 20 liters of fuel, dinners for two people and guided visits for free to local and international tourists that register in any hotel in the country during the second two weeks of February, when the influx of visitors decreases.

Pluna will begin renewal of its fleet
Pluna will add the first of seven medium freight aircrafts for regional flights. The new Bombardier CRJ 900, with 90 seats, will be aimed at increasing the frequencies to Buenos Aires and San Pablo, as well as servicing new routes to Rosario and Cordoba, in Argentina, and Brasilia.
Tam looks for world alliance

By July, TAM expects to sign an agreement with one of the three world aviation alliances: Star alliance, Oneworld or Skyteam.

Tam will fly from Rio to Miami and New York
The airline will fly from Rio de Janeiro to Miami and New York, in the framework of the agreements between Brasil and the United States.
Tourism leads activity in America

The country is leader in tourist growth in the American continent with a growth of 12% during 2007. Furthermore, during January of this year the tourist activity increased by 10% due to the 400,000 tourists that entered the country, coming mainly from Brasil and Argentina. Valparaiso and Viña del Mar are the most visited areas.

Aerolineas Sudamericanas complied with permit requirements

Aerolineas Sudamericanas began the countdown to fly Bolivian skies as a commercial airline after having complied with all the requirements and thoroughly following the instructions and specifications established in the corresponding laws and regulations.

Pyramidal center of the Vicus culture discovered

A pyramidal center which belongs to the Vicus culture was discovered in the settlement of Laynes, Morropon province, by workers who were carrying out cleaning duties in the area. The news mobilized archaeologists from the National Culture Institute of Piura, and after a visit to the area, the existence of a religious center or cemetery of the higher hierarchy of the Vicus culture was confirmed.

Hilton assesses beginning construction of hotel in Cusco
The North American chain assesses beginning the construction of a hotel in Cusco next year. The feasibility of defining this project depends on the conclusion of the chain’s other projects such as the inauguration of the Resort in Paracas, among others.
Dico Group interested in constructing resorts
The Spanish group Dico would be interested in constructing five-star beach resorts in Mancora and Tumbes. This company is focused on luxury tourist projects such as resorts, golf courts, among others.
PeruRail launches new on-line reservation software
PeruRail announced the launching of an on-line reservation software through its Internet site. This new service will enable direct customers of PeruRail to reserve and pay for the train tickets for their trips in the country, even before their arrival in Peru. www.perurail.com
PeruRail begins improvements in Ollantaytambo
As from the beginning of the year, PeruRail began with a new system of frequencies on the Ollantaytambo-Machupicchy route. The objective is to offer greater possibilities to the numerous tourists that wish to visit the citadel, having the possibility of boarding and disembarking in Ollantaytambo.
International airlines offer more flights

Air Comet, Lan and Iberia offered to increase their frequencies towards Ecuador as well as selling handicrafts produced by Ecuadorian women during their flights and the exhibition of the Ministry of Tourism’s promotional material.

Swisshotel among the top hotels in Ecuador
The website of Internet Trip Advisor carried out the qualification of Ecuador’s main hotels. The Internet site decided to grant first place to the Quito Swisshotel, followed by the Four Points by Sheraton Quito, the Patio Andaluz hotel, JW Marriott, the Quito hotel and Los Alpes.
Easyfly will purchase 5 aircraft from British Aerospace

Easyfly will purchase 5 aircraft from British Aerospace. With this fleet it hopes to open the service to 10 destinations, having requested to Aerocivil the incorporation of a new operation center in the Enrique Olaya Herrera airport of Medellin.

Airlines multiply air connections

Central America substantially increased the air connections with Europe during 2007. This favored a considerable increase in the arrival of European tourists who choose the region as tourist destination, as confirmed by sources of the Agencia de Promocion Turistica de Centroamerica (Central American Tourist Promotion Agency).

Meridien extends its presence

Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Inc. announced its plans to open a Le Meridien hotel in Panama City. The company signed a franchise agreement with Bern Hotels & Resorts Panama for the management of the first Le Meridien hotel in Panama, programmed to open in mid 2009.

Mexicana will open new DF-Edmonton route

As from June 1st, the airline will open a new route from Mexico City to Edmonton, in Canada. As from this date, it will also begin flights to Calgary, also in Canada. Thus, Mexicana will have seven flights between the capital and the Canadian province of Alberta, three to Edmonton and four to Calgary each week.

Delta will inaugurate three new routes from Cancun
The airline announced that as from this month it will open three new routes between several cities of the USA and Cancun. The new flights began on February 2nd, with the Cancun-Orlando and Cancun-Raleigh Durham, in North Carolina, routes. On April 12th, it will begin to operate the Cancun-Hartford, in Connecticut, route.
Xcaret will invest 100 million pesos in 2008
The Xcaret Park, in Quintana Roo, announced that for 2008, it will invest near to 100 million pesos in the development of new attractions and the maintenance of its natural resources. The aim for this year is to attract more than 1’100,000 visitors in comparison to the 1‘065.000 that arrived in 2007. www.xcaret.com/
The country with greatest tourist potential in the Caribbean

According to the ILO, the Dominican Republic ended 2007 with the best outcome in the whole of the Caribbean. The island was placed as the country with “greatest potential in tourist matters within the Caribbean area.”

International Tourism Fair Havana 2008

The Cuban Minister of Tourism announced the opening of the International Tourism Fair, Havana 2008 to the international market. This will take place in the Morro-La Cabaña historic tourist complex between May 5th and 9th. The new edition of the fair will be dedicated to the integration between culture and tourism.

Peru: Luxury in the Jungle


I still remember when I made my first visit to the jungle. It was about 20 years ago to Iquitos. After nearly 3 hours in a motorboat we arrived at the hostel. It was rustic, very rustic. There was no electricity. The refrigerator ran on kerosene. The water, from the river… the food was delicious, but very limited by what the environment near the hostel offered, and very simple. It was almost like camping, or barely a step towards something like comfort (or towards less discomfort?). Read more...
